String Bag (Long Handles) - Duck Egg Blue £4.00
by brian gresham Date Added: Monday 27 July, 2015
...I believe your string bags, could help relieve one of the pollution problems Europe has today. The widespread use of the one-use disposable plastic bags. Your company could increase the popularity of the string bag, and your profits! The following was composed by myself and posted to friends and the public on FaceBook

Single use PLASTIC BAGS are a world-wide problem. Older member of the public may remember the British aircraft, the Fairy “Swordfish”, but more to the point, that that aircraft was affectionatly nicknamed the “Stringbag” Why? The humble stringbag was todays plastic bag. However, unlike the plastic bag, It was very strong, would expand to carry huge and very varied loads. As could the Swordfish! The string bag was cheap to produce, it could last for MANY years, it took up very little space when not in use and it was biodegradable. In my day, the string-bag was only available in one size. That one bag could carry the equivalent of three of todays plastic bagful’s. Once that bag was empty, it could be hung on the hook behind the kitchen door, stuffed into a pocket, put in a drawer, or it and 20 others, put into the stringbag already hanging behind the kitchen door! It would NOT be thrown away because it could easily last for ten years or more! They were bags made from string open mesh. Materials variable, but possibly jute, hemp, or cotton. The mesh diameter about 25 mm. If these bags, or similar alternatives to them, were available in various sizes and sensibly priced, the disposable plastic bag would become redundant. Regrettably, polystyrene, polyester and other non-biodegradable materials cheaper to aquire or produce could be used in place of ‘string’. Governments would need to subsidise the genuine ‘string’ string bag to avoid the problem of unscrupulous manufacturer from cashing in on the genuine item. I have no idea what happens to the 5p currently charged for a single use plastic bag and I don’t know how supermarkets would view the introduction of string bags. If anyone out there could print out photo of a string bag, that might help. I welcome any criticisms of, or modification to my ideas. I won’t be pursuing the matter. It is a problem that will have no impact on my future!!!
